| Early leather/Early kink by Rob Bienvenu and Chuck Renslow In this talk Chuck Renslow, whose history as a leader in the leather community dates from the 1950's, and sociologist Rob Bienvenu provide an overview of early leather/kink groups and the origins of our community. Come to learn about the early men and women who built our community, their struggles and accomplishments, which can provide inspiration and wisdom as we face new challenges today. How you will benefit from this presentation: Chuck Renslow was present at the beginnings of the leather community in the 1950’s and remains one of our foremost leaders today. He provides a unique perspective of first person experience spanning decades that younger members of the community will benefit from hearing. Rob Bienvenu has conducted extensive research on the origins of the leather/kink communities, and offers a scholarly perspective on this history that emphasizes rigorous empirical research and, in this presentation, separating fact from myth when talking about the history of the leather/kink community. The two approaches complement each other well and previous versions of this talk given by Renslow and Bienvenu have been warmly received. . How this presentation will arouse you: Leather/kink is a cultural movement that extends across generations and has been built through struggle, creativity, and joyful work. A sense of community, of membership in a real group of people who have a history that includes but transcends sexuality, is an important part of our modern identity. Renslow and Bienvenu cannot guarantee an epiphany, but through history they can help attendees to realize that they are a part of a greater whole, that they are building upon the work of previous generations, and that their work today matters and will make a difference to future generations. About the presenters: Rob Bienvenu, Ph.D., is a sociologist who lives in the Washington, DC area. His research addresses history, health, and policy issues affecting sexual minorities, with focus on strategies for inclusion and positive change. Chuck Renslow has been a leader in the leather community from the beginning. Chuck's long resume includes founding the famous Gold Coast Leather bar in Chicago (1958), the International Mr. Leather Contest, The Leather Archives and Museum, and numerous businesses that serve the leather and gay communities. |
